Is the grad scheme the only option?

  February 27, 2017

As a graduate job seeker the most popular search result for 'graduate jobs' is a number of different graduate schemes with big companies such as PwC, Coca-Cola, and Sky. There are so many grad schemes, in fact that it can sometimes be hard to see any other options available. So if you're like the majority of graduates, and you don't get a place on these coveted placements, you'd be forgiven for thinking that's the end of the line, and there's no other avenue available to you. But if you are one of the graduates who hasn't managed to secure a place on a grad scheme, don't be disheartened because believe it or not, that's not your only option.

A lot of grads are tricked into thinking that they can only apply for 'graduate jobs' after university, mainly due to the fact that typically they have limited work experience. Admittedly it is true that without adequate experience it does become a fair bit harder to get your foot in the door, but it's definitely not impossible. Of course if you've been trapped in the 'no experience, no job ergo how can I get experience?' cycle for a little while you may well have started to give up hope. But don't – the tides are beginning to change when it comes to graduate recruitment you just have to know where to look.

A lot of companies are now making the shift away from experience-based assessments into the realm of aptitude assessments, where attitudes, behaviours and potential is more valuable than how many hours you've clocked in so far. Unfortunately it's still not the primary approach for many businesses, but at Happy Work we are proudly spearheading this change. With our unique approach to graduate recruitment, we help match up companies with the right candidates, based on what they really need from an individual, rather than just how much experience they've got. We believe that in the future, all major companies will hire based on potential rather than past experience, but if you don't want to have to wait for that future, then just fill in your Happy Work profile, and become amongst the first to be part of the recruitment revolution that is heading our way.
